Grignan-les-Adhémar

Grignan-les-Adhémar is a distinctive appellation located in the heart of the Rhône Valley, known for producing rouge, blanc, and rosé wines that express a generous and typified character. Formerly recognized as AOC Coteaux-du-Tricastin in 1973 and rebranded as Grignan-les-Adhémar in 2010, this celebrated wine region covers 1,800 hectares of vineyards stretching between Montélimar and Bollène on the left bank of the Rhône, situated in the northern edge of the southern vineyards.

The vineyards are crafted with a deep respect for tradition; they are harvested and vinified in the customary manner, yielding an impressive 52,000 hectoliters of wine annually. The wines are produced from a rich palette of grape varieties that define the appellation’s character. In red wines, a mandatory minimum of 30% Syrah is blended with Grenache noir, along with selections of Carignan, Cinsault, and Marselan, with the addition of Mourvèdre to further enrich the blend. For white wines, Viognier is established as the reference grape, also requiring a minimum of 30% of its presence, and it is often paired with Grenache blanc, Clairette, Roussane, and Marsanne to create a harmonious profile.

The unique terroir of Grignan-les-Adhémar lies in its transitional setting between the northern and southern Rhône Valley. The area benefits from a typically Mediterranean climate, influenced by the surrounding reliefs. The ever-present mistral wind ensures exceptional sunlight while creating diverse microclimates throughout the appellation. The southern parts of the vineyards experience a hot and dry environment, whereas the areas at the foot of the massifs enjoy cooler and more humid conditions. The soils, predominantly of sedimentary origin, are either argilo-calcaires or sandy, providing the perfect foundation for the vines to express their full potential.

Even though the wines of Grignan-les-Adhémar may not be as widely recognized as some of their more famous neighbors, they are celebrated for their elegance and character. The red wines are noted for their refined and fruity elegance, the rosés strike a balance with power and harmony, and the white wines are admired for their rich, perfumed bouquet. This appellation truly embodies the spirit and diversity of the Rhône Valley, offering wines that are both expressive and memorable.
